HELPing Kenya was the first project undertaken by Medics HELP. It was a huge success. Six of our volunteers returned from Kenya in mid-February after spending a month there providing medical day camps for slum children and orphans, assisting in providing medical care at understaffed public clinincs and assisting with the care and education of children at orphanages/child-care centres for the under-priviledged. The objectives of this project were twofold. Our first objective was to provide direct assistance to the people of Kenya in the form of a group of volunteers who worked side-by-side with local Kenyans, providing relief work in medical clinics where the population has very little access to appropriate medical care and where local healthcare workers are significantly understaffed. The non-medical volunteers provided relief work at orphanages, helping to provide care and HIV/AIDS education to some of Kenya's thousands of parentless children.
The Medics HELP team also hosted several free medical day camps in order to provide medical care and treatment to Kenya's slum-dwelling children. At these camps hundreds of children (and some adults) were treated for a variety of diseases and injuries free of charge.
The second major objective of the January 2009 project was for a small team of Medics HELP directors to conduct the necessary research and planning for our Clinic and Community Centre Project,, slated to begin by 2011. This team worked with local Kenyans, community leaders and other aid organizations to identify communities that could most benefit from future assistance provided by Medics HELP.
The HELPing Kenya, 2009 project was an essential step forward in laying the groundwork for future projects in Kenya and the rest of Africa. This innitiative required substantial support from both our volunteers and generous contributors. We thank all of those who helped to make it happen.
